Viewpoint and memorial against forgetting
It is a place of remembrance, a memorial to the 21 fallen soldiers of the village in World War I. It rises 20 meters into the sky. Like a pointing finger that tells us: We must not forget.
At the same time, the 370 m high Langscheider Höhe, as the highest point in Langscheid, offers the perfect location for an observation tower that offers a sensational view over the village and the surrounding landscape of the Sorpesee. Thus, the Langscheid War Memorial creates a place of retrospective that simultaneously allows a view into the distance, into the here and now.
On November 19, 1927, the municipality of Langscheid decided to build the war memorial, with a hall of honor and courtyard of honor, which was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Sundern on August 11, 1997 in agreement with the Westphalian Office for Monument Preservation in Münster.
In April 1999, the “Förderverein Ehrenmal” (War Memorial Support Association) was founded in Langscheid, which set itself the task of repairing the tower war memorial, which had become urgently necessary. The restoration of the tower, which was already closed to the public, was to be financed and promoted with tower festivals, collections and donations. The renovation ended with the official opening of the tower on June 15, 2003.
Today the tower serves mainly as a viewpoint. And this view is unbeatably beautiful. If you would like to climb the tower, you can borrow the key for the gate there in advance from the Haus des Gastes (guest house). You can get the key (for a deposit) at the Haus des Gastes.
