The AiRlebnisweg: a Break “to Go”

Everyone wants to go back to nature. But preferably not on foot. We cannot confirm this, because on the AiRlebnisweg everyone is really on the move per pedes. Above, a swarm of migratory birds swings loudly across the bright blue sky, below a good dozen sailboats rock up and down at the jetty. Life is slowly awakening on the banks of the Sorpesee: Exactly the right time for an AiRlebnis. On the Sorpesee, the AiRlebnisweg in Amecke on the Sorpe pre-basin is one of the highlights for walkers and hikers: A popular destination for anyone who likes to be active.

Real AiRlebnisse – Especially for Little Hikers

On the 3.4-kilometer-long “AiRlebnisweg” on the edge of the Sauerland reservoir near Amecke, 20 interactive stations revolve around the themes of air, breathing and water. The stations are designed so that young and old alike can have fun, learn something and experience something. This means that the Sorpesee pre-basin can not only be circumnavigated in an entertaining way, but also “with all your senses”. The interactive circular route was created in 2013 as part of the Regionale project “Sauerland Seen”. The AiRlebnisweg is fully illuminated and can be used all year round. In addition, the entire route is barrier-free and therefore “airlebbar” for everyone.

AiRlebnisweg Amecke: 20 Interactive Stations on the Themes of Air, Breathing and Water

You can walk the AiRlebnisweg in Amecke on the Sorpesee in both directions, around the Sorpe pre-basin, and “airleben”, no matter which station you start your tour at. If you are arriving by car, it is recommended to use one of the parking spaces at the Sorpesee pre-basin. In the following, we will give you an overview of what awaits you on the AiRlebnisweg.

Historical Aroma and Fragrance Garden in the Kurpark Amecke

A treat for your senses: From spring to autumn, you can enjoy the various scents and aromas of the herbs and flowers in the raised beds in the historical aroma and fragrance garden in the Kurpark Amecke – not far from the pedestrian bridge.

Health Course in the Kurpark Amecke

Also in the Kurpark Amecke, in the immediate vicinity of the children’s playground, there are four play and fitness equipment for young and old.

Relaxation in the Sorpe Diamond

In the old Kurpark Amecke you will find a type of building with a very special architecture: The Sorpe Diamond. Relaxing sounds can be heard when you enter the diamond. Water runs down a wall and when dusk falls, a play of colors spreads across the illuminated outer walls. Take a seat, relax and linger. Listen to the sounds of the music, watch the water running down the water wall and the fountain on the opposite bank. Your children are in good hands in the meantime: In the outdoor area there is a seesaw water pump with a so-called mast nozzle.

Experience with all your Senses: Sensory Labyrinth

Try to find your way out again: In the further course of the AiRlebnisweg you will find a labyrinth of hornbeam hedges and distorting mirrors, which are particularly popular with children. There is also a bench installed here.

Listen Carefully: the Listening Ear

Listen to the sounds of the small river Hespe: The listening ear is a few meters away from the bridge over the Hespe and transmits the gurgling sounds of the water under the bridge, quasi like a “telephone”. Since this element, due to its construction, is not immediately apparent as a “forest telephone or listening ear”, there are always interesting observations and conversations between parents and children. The children usually know what the system is all about before the parents do.

Barefoot Path and Water Treading Area in the Lake

Below the campsite “Campen am Damm”, the AiRlebnisweg meanders along the bank of the Sorpe pre-basin. Three barefoot experience areas with different materials (natural, artificial, types of wood) invite you to “feel” them barefoot. On the slope meadow, a little further on, visitors have the opportunity to experience a dew treading path in the early morning. There is a foot washing stele in the immediate vicinity; a little further down you can use a natural water treading area in the lake. A little further along the path there is another mud area for the little ones, with a rope to hold on to. Along the way you will find several benches, some of which are equipped with standing aids for people with disabilities. Another highlight can be found on the meadow next to the dew treading path: Here there is a rotating lounger with which you can enjoy both the lake view and the sunset on the opposite western slope.

Nature Experience on and in the Water

This station is located below the Café & Restaurant AiRnah, in a park-like tree population and leads down to the lake. Here you will find a children’s playground with a slide, sandbox and much more, as well as a slackline and balancing ropes.

On the banks of the pre-basin, a mud area with a lever pump invites you to really “get dirty”, as we say here in the Sauerland. For the older visitors there is a water treading area and a lounger or bench in the water. The stepping stones make the lounger in the water accessible at any time of the year.

The Sorpe Eel Invites You to Balance

In the area below the parking lot at the dam of the Sorpe pre-basin, the so-called “Sorpe eel” awaits large and small visitors: A balancing element modeled from boulders, which runs from the water area to the parking lot with a length of approx. 25m. An oak trunk with sawn steps was installed as a further balancing element. The water column was designed as a rustic water point. A large boulder with an integrated basin allows for refreshment, especially for the forearms. At this AiRlebnisweg station you will also find a bench and in the immediate vicinity also the entrance portal to the Premium hiking trail “Waldroute”.

Parents who are just arriving with their children at the parking lot can let them run directly to the play elements without worry.

In the immediate vicinity of the parking lot, towards campsite “Campen am Damm”, you will also find a gastronomic establishment, the AiRnah. In addition to food, coffee and cake, you can also purchase snacks, ice cream and drinks at the attached kiosk.

Not far from these stations, you can reach the ship landing stage of the MS Sorpesee via the dam that separates the Sorpe pre-basin from the main basin. From here you can also “cross over” by ship to Langscheid at the other end of the lake.

Water March at the “AiRrlebnisplatz” with Water Fountain

On the newly built lakeside promenade of the western shore you will find a water playground, especially for the little visitors: A water snail as well as a watercourse, a ladle and various water spray nozzles that reach from different plateau heights into the water of the Sorpe pre-basin. The water fountain in the pre-basin is even illuminated at night.

Here you will find parking spaces in the immediate vicinity as well as the Café Heimathafen am Sorpesee. There you can enjoy not only coffee and cake, but also snacks on the panoramic terrace.
